Our Level 5 Teaching Diploma will help aspirants develop practical teaching skills that would enable them to work professionally as a Further Education teacher/lecturer.

Furthermore, this Diploma in Teaching will give learners in-depth knowledge, understanding and professional practice regarding a myriad of teaching areas and subskills such as: curriculum planning, lesson delivery, assessment strategies, classroom management, safeguarding, learner support, equality and diversity, digital/online pedagogies and professional responsibilities within the FE sector. Learners will also have the opportunity to exercise reflective practice skills, inclusive teaching strategies, educational technologies by teaching learners with diverse needs, as well as gathering authentic teaching practice through placement hours and teaching observations.

Entry Profile for Level 5 Teaching Diploma

Our Level 5 Teaching Diploma which has replaced the previous Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) has been designed for aspirants looking to progress into teaching in the Further Education and Skills sector though QTLS status. Our L5 DiT is also an ideal starting point for aspiring lecturers, trainers, tutors, or industry professionals wishing to transition to education and training. However, learners must hold a Level 2 in English and Maths and be well-qualified or experienced in their specialist area with good literacy, numeracy and digital skills. This level 5 teaching qualification is suitable for learners already in a teaching placement or have access to a suitable teaching/voluntary position to complete the practical component of the course.

Post Qualification Pathways

Upon successful completion of the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching FE and Skills, enrolled learners will be eligible to claim a free accredited certificate for the Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices. Additionally, after successful completion, learners may work towards achieving Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, to strengthen their professional profile as a qualified teacher. Lastly, our Level 5 Diploma in Teaching can also open up new avenues for aspirants planning to work in teaching, training, curriculum development, quality assurance, education leadership, or other education-related positions in colleges, adult education and vocational training setups such as FE Lecturer/Teacher. Assessment for this Level 5 Teaching qualification is completed via:

The 250 hours of teaching placement would be covered through the following teaching/supporting duties:

Direct Teaching Practice:

  • A minimum of 150 hours of teaching practice
    1. 100 hours of teaching must be provided in the specialist subject area (Out of these 100 hours, 80 hours should be face-to-face and 20 hours should be remote live teaching)
    2. 50 hours of teaching could be in any subject area
 

Supporting Teaching Practice: 

  • A minimum of 100 hours of non teaching practice activities like:
    1. Team meetings, Planning and Workshops
    2. Interviews and Assessment Meetings
    3. Observations and Curriculum Planning
    4. CPD Engagement/Participation
    5. Other Activities

 

* Observations are conducted by a tutor/mentor, subject specialist or placement mentor.

All trainees must be supported by two placement-based staff members, in addition to their course tutor.

Subject Specialist Mentor

  • To provide subject-specific guidance in the trainee’s teaching area
  • Offer approximately 30 minutes guidance session per week

 

Pastoral Support Mentor

  • To provide general guidance, wellbeing, and placement support
  • Offer approximately 30 minutes guidance session per week

 

*The second Pastoral Support Mentor will be in liason with us for monitoring ongoing progress and report

Trainee teachers must gain experience in a minimum of two teaching locations to ensure a broad range of teaching practice.

The second placement must include at least 20 hours and should ideally be with a different provider.

  • Where a second provider is not possible, alternatives may include:
    • Teaching a different subject area within the same provider
    • Teaching at a different venue within the same provider

 

The 20-hour requirement is not limited to teaching hours and may include wider professional practice experience.

The course is offered via self-paced learning model. On average, completing our Level 5 Diploma in Teaching takes about 10 months depending on the learner’s study pace and schedule. The course access also remains available for 12 months from enrolment. However, If a learner requires extra time past the initial access period, a small re-enrolment fee will be charged.

The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching FE and Skills is the updated qualification that has now replaced the previous Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET), or DTTLS qualification, as the recognised standard qualification for QTLS status eligibility and teaching within the Further Education and Skills sector.

There are 10 mandatory teaching observations for the Level 5 Teaching Diploma, carried out in a real Further Education setting, typically with groups of 10 or more learners. Each observation lasts at least 45 minutes and contributes evidence towards occupational teaching standards, with early sessions focusing on developmental feedback and later ones used for formal assessment.

Observations are completed by a tutor, subject specialist, or mentor, with up to two delivered remotely live and one additional remote observation where appropriate. All observation records form part of the learner’s portfolio and contribute to the final professional discussion assessment.
