I signed up for the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care after being nudged by my manager, and I’ll admit I wasn’t sure how much I’d get out of it at first. As it turned out, quite a lot of the content directly matched situations I deal with regularly, which made it easier to see the point of what I was learning rather than it feeling abstract. I appreciated that the assessments asked me to relate things back to my own workplace, rather than just testing whether I’d memorised the material. The flexibility to fit study around shifts was a big help too, since my hours change week to week. It took longer to finish than I originally planned, but that was more down to my own schedule than the course itself.

The safeguarding and duty of care sections were probably the most useful, they made me stop and think about the small things that can slip through the cracks when you’re just focused on getting through the day and looking after someone. I also found the bit on respecting people’s choices really made me think, because it’s easy to assume you know what’s best for someone without really asking them. It wasn’t the easiest course, if I’m honest, but I think my support tutor Maya made it very easy for me with her feedback. Either way, there’s a fair bit I’ve taken from it that I can actually use day to day at work.

One thing I liked about Level 3 diploma was that it wasn’t just about looking after someone physically. There was quite a lot about communication, dignity, privacy and helping people stay as independent as possible, which I think sometimes gets overlooked. Some of the terminology took me a little while to get used to, but after going through the material a couple of times it made sense and the support tutor made it easy for me to comprehend when needed. I came away from the course with a much clearer idea of what good care should actually look like day to day.
